A SYNTHESIS OF 2 OCTYL DODECYL ETHER

Abstract: 2octyl dodecyl ether is synthesized from solid sodium hydroxide,Guerbet alcohol and epichlorohydrin by phasetransfer catalysistetrabutyl ammonium.Effects of molar ratio of raw materials,amount of catalyst,reaction temperature and reaction time on the yield of 2octyl dodecyl ether are discussed.The final determined optimum conditions are that n(Guerbet alcohol)∶ n(epichlorohydrin)∶ n(Solid caustic soda)=1.00∶ 1.15∶ 1.20,the amount of catalyst is 0.05(relative to alcohol molar ratio),reaction temperature and time are at 50℃ for 4 hours.Under these conditions,2octyl dodecyl ether can be obtained at 79.8% yield rate.The epoxy value measured by hydrochloric acidacetone method is 0.232.The final product structure is confirmed by infrared spectroscopy.
