Elucidation for Confucianism: Honesty and Elegance——Thoughts on State Governing and Literary Features in Tian Xi's Memorials

Abstract: Tian Xi is an important memorial writer in the early Northern Song Dynasty(960-1127). Tian Xi has been diligent in writing memorials with 25 available now out of the total fifty-two. Through literature collation and text research of Tian Xi's memorials, we explore the connotation of the thoughts on governance in Tian Xi's memorials, which we find out includes the following:reducing forced labors and taxes and duties, providing the people with peaceful life, advising frankly to the monarch, cultivating morality to eliminate disasters, consolidating frontier defence, avoiding wars, putting people and nation to the priority and establishing laws and regulations for state affairs. In terms of literary characteristics,Tian Xi's memorials are characterized by parallelism,variety of reasoning and conciseness,which reflects the typical style characteristics of memorials in the early Northern Song Dynasty. From the perspective of political influence, Tian Xi's memorials to the emperor assist the temporary emperors and state governing, and inspire the loyalty and righteousness of the Northern Song Dynasty. Tian Xi's memorials on state governing, and the honest and elegant writing style were highly praised by Fan Zhongyan, Sima Guang, Su Shi and other famous officials of the Northern Song Dynasty.
