Abstract: The temperature distribution in a wellbore has an important effect on the drilling operation while drilling. On the basis of the studies of previous researchers, this paper presents a new mathematical model, which is solved by finite volume method to predict the temperature distribution in a wellbore during circulation or shut-in in terms of the law of conservation of energy.
The verification of the simulating results of the model prediction in comparison with the field data was presented. The model can be used to calculate the circulating and shut-in temperature in a wellbore, as well as the temperature distribution of formation around the wellbore.

Key words: drilling, temperature distribution, circulating temperature, shut-in temperature
