Abstract:

Objective: To study β-hematin formation inhibition activity of 24 herbal medicines often used by Bai nationality and to
provide the experimental evidence for finding new effective antimalarial medicines from natural products. Methods: Plant materials
were extracted with 75% ethanol and distilled water using the reflux method. After the extract solutions were combined and
concentrated under reduced pressure, the resulting residue was completely dried by lyophilization. The dried samples were screened for
antimalarial activity by using β-hematin formation inhibition assay. Bioactivity results were evaluated by IC50 values. Results: Among
the 24 plant samples, water extracts of Onosma paniculatum showed the best activity to inhibit β-hematin formation with the IC50 value
of(1 254.1±3.9)μg/mL. Water extracts of Hemiphragma heterophyllum, Arisaema erubescens and Phyllanthus emblica had weak
activity to inhibit β-hematin formation with the IC50 values over 1 388.9 μg/mL. Conclusion: O. paniculatum, H. heterophyllum, A.
erubescens and P. emblica reveal potential antimalarial activity and deserve further study in the future.

Key words: Bai nationality, herbal medicines, crude extract, antimalaria, β-hematin formation inhibition assay
