Abstract: Religion is a discipline that emerged in Europe in the nineteenth century. Since Friedrich Max Muller, the pioneer of this
new discipline, scholars of religious studies have been continually asking what their disciplines are. To answer this fundamental
question, we cannot say "He who knows one, knows none" like Muller did more than a hundred years ago. Instead, the scope of the
discipline of religious studies must be clearly defined. In essence, since ancient Greek philosophy, there have been objective thoughts
on religion. As time goes by, various ideas and methods have been added, and religious studies has become a discipline. The
development of religious thoughts contains the evolution of history of thoughts in viewing religions and pursuing fundamental problems.

Key words: religious studies, history of thoughts, disciplinization
