A Brief Introduction to the English Translation and Research on Miao Epic

  • Online:2024-09-15 Published:2024-09-26

Abstract:

As an oral epic of the Miao people, Miao Epic has been introduced to the West since the end of the 19th century, with a
history of more than a hundred years, and has been translated successively by David Crockett Graham, Mark Bender, Keith Parsons and Kenneth Parsons, as well as other abridged translations. With its long-time span and far-reaching influence in the English-speaking world, Miao Epic is of high research value and has been the subject of numerous foreign studies. The active translation by foreign missionaries, the voluntary participation of folk translation forces, and the promotion by official forces have all contributed to the spread of the Epic in the Western world. The English translation and western dissemination have deepened the interpretation and cultural cohesion of the global Miao people of their ethnic origin and culture, enriched the differences and diversity of Chinese and Western cultures, and will expand greater space in the context of cross-border ethnic cultural sharing and international exchanges.
