A Study on the Evolution of Mahakala Belief in Dali Area

Abstract

Abstract:

Mahakala belief in Dali area has changed from the Dharmapala to the Guardian God and God protecting people. Mahakala
is originally the Dharmapala of Buddhism. The rise of Acarya and the political belief of being Wheel-rolling King of Nanzhao Emperor
made Mahakala the role of Guardian. With the collapse of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom and the decline of the Acarya, the lost of the
political support made the Mahakala turned into a God protection common people.
