Conscious Significance of the Pictographic Nature of Traditional Calligraphy

Chinese character is the "yeast" of Chinese calligraphy. As a major way to construct Chinese character and the primary
abstract of concrete substance movement, pictograph has some functions as indication, visualization and vocalization. Calligraphy is the highest expressive form of Chinese character. The pictographic and representational nature of Chinese character weakens with the development of Chinese character font. However, the expressive form of calligraphy still keeps the pictographic nature and its conscious significance will never fade.
