Abstract: The system of people's assessors is of great significance in ensuring judicial justice and openness and people's democracy, promoting judicial credibility, strengthening judicial supervision and publicity of the rule of law, and in promoting settlement of court cases. However, at present, people's assessor system is subject to laws and regulations that stipulate excessively high conditions for the selection and appointment of people's assessors, and unclear provisions on the exercise of people's assessors' functions and powers, performance appraisal and accountability. In order for people's assessors to better play their role of in case trials, measures should be taken in the construction and improvement of the selection mechanism and management system, substantive participation in case trials, the use of rewards and punishments, and improvement of training and exit mechanism so that disputes are resolved in varied ways and the quality of judicial service is improved and the judicial civilization construction is accelerated.
