In vitro Study of the Effect of Scallop Shells Extract on Fat Degradation

Objective: To investigate the effect of scallop shells on fat degradation and find new ways to increase their added value.
Methods: To evaluate the effect of bioactive substances of scallop shells on fat degradation, 3T3-L1 cells were treated with methanol extract of scallop shells, the amounts of glycerol secreted from 3T3-L1 cells were measured and the fat contents in 3T3-L1 cells were observed by Oil Red O staining. Results: 3T3-L1 cells treated with scallop shell extract secreted more glycerol (P<0.05) and were with less fat. Conclusion: This study provided evidence that bioactive substances in scallop shells promote fat degradation, which suggests a potential value of scallop shells.
