Developmental Research on Chinese Orthographic Awareness of Children

Abstract: Children including kindergartners and elementary school students of Grade 1 to Grade 3 were adopted in the study. The
Chinese character orthographic awareness and the developmental characteristics of those children were investigated in whole word
level, radicals level and strokes level. Results showed that: ①Preschool children have already got the visual awareness of whole words
and radicals. Children in Grade 1 made great progress in radicals' position awareness and strokes' visual characteristics. Children in
Grade 3 continued to develop in all aspects of Chinese orthographic awareness. ②Children's Chinese character recognition gradually
focused on information of radicals and strokes with the growth of grade. ③Children's radical awareness was acquired firstly, the
radicals' position awareness were acquired after entering primary school.
