Abstract: There are various types of complements in modern Chinese, and there will be novel insights through researches on complements from the perspective of semantic orientation. Semantic orientation of complements may be divided into single orientation and double orientations in general, both of which can be subcategorized into several types. Studies on semantic orientation of complements are meaningful to Teaching Chinese as a Second Language(TCSL)which has unique features in the stages of primary, mediate, and advanced levels of teaching. Level-based teaching, graphic teaching, and comparative teaching methods are the most remarkable applications of semantic orientation of complements in TCSL.
