Ethnography of Folk Games in Hmong Villages in Weishan, Dali

Abstract: In Hmong village located at Sanhe village community of Ma'anshan township in Weishan county of Dali prefecture, there
are four typical folk games, i.e. "Grabbing the Dragon Egg", "Picking the Bean Branch", "Throwing the Mabao" and "Kicking the
Chicken". Based on fieldwork, combined with interviews and reference literature, this study firstly discusses the folk games from the
perspective of gender relationship. Then, it discusses the interactions among the people from the perspective of space relationship
(participator, spectators, absentees). Finally, placing folk games into the realm of public life, it explores the power relationship of folk
games at interpersonal relationship of Hmong society.
