On the Nature of Chinese Popularity in ASEAN

With the frequent contact of cultural communication between China and ASEAN, the two sides have carried out various
cultural activities. An increasing number of Confucius colleges and classes have been established and the scale of Chinese education
expands every year. Under those circumstances, many countries have developed a preference to Chinese learning. However, some
Western countries have mistakenly considered "Chinese popularity" of ASEAN as Chinese hegemony and cultural imperialism. From
the perspective of sociolinguistics, this paper aims to reveal the nature of Chinese popularity and its unseparatable cultural
relationship with ASEAN through an analysis of the characteristics of language hegemony and its historical development.
