Abstract:

Within the framework of cognitive linguistics, this paper analyzes the metonymic mechanism manifested in the production
and development of catchwords. Catchwords are created and developed by such metonymic ideas as taking prominent objects as
cognitive reference points, activating target domain through the source domain. Within the same idealized cognitive model, metonymy
plays a very important role in the course of creation and development of catchwords by replacing the integral part with the whole or the
integral part, and re-categorization of word classes.

Key words: catchwords, metonymy, re-categorization of word classes
