Abstract:

Subtitle translation plays an important role in helping the target audiences understand situation comedies. Based on the Skopos Theory，we studied the translation of the humorous dialogues in The Big Band Theory，aiming to find out the methods used by the translators. The study leads us to the following conclusions: the primary principle in the translation of the dialogues in The Big Band Theory is to retain or reproduce the humor of the original dialogues. Therefore，translators should employ appropriate translation methods according to the culture and traditions of the target audience and its expectation so that the humor is reproduced and the target audience can better understand the humor of original dialogues.
