Abstract:

With quantitative questionnaire and qualitative interview methods,we surveyed junior university students from four
colleges in Changsha and Wuhan, trying to find out whether there are differences in language analytic abilities between the high
score group and the low group and what the differences are. The results of the study indicate there are some significant differences
in understanding / application of lexical meaning, lexical morphology, understanding /application of sentence meaning,
and in syntax between the high score group and the low group students, and hence significant differences in total value of
language analysis ability. Among these four aspects, understanding /application of lexical meaning and lexical morphology
are significantly different. Qualitative interviews verify the differences reflected by questionnaire. In conclusion,high-score
and low-score group students display different tendencies in language analytic abilities. Therefore, language learners should
determine effective and suitable methods of learning according to their own characteristics in each aspect.
