Abstract:

Ian McEwan’s short stories have a unique charm of narrative skills. His short stories are short in length，which combine linear narrative structure and narrative mode. Besides，in response to the need to effectively reflect the reality and express the theme，McEwan tells the story from a different narrative point of view and changes the angle correspondingly. Furthermore，the writer is not only good at using free direct speech and free indirect speech，but also at selecting narrative language according to different ages and status of the narrators. What can better display Ian McEwen’s narrative skills is the fact that he applies many narrative form elements of modern western novels (irony，speaking out from the character’s mouth，viewpoint selections and symbolic images etc.) to show their own ethical position implicitly.
