Abstract:

News reports have become increasingly multi-modalized thanks to the advancement of modern media technology,
and the combination of texts and images has become the mainstream expression of news discourses. Words and images have
become a unified body of meaning-expression and evaluation,so the concepts and ideology of the news media can be reflected
in the text-image interaction. In this research, the text-image evaluation mechanism will be discussed with reference to visual
grammar and evaluation theory. Chinese and western media coverage on Paris terrorist attacks will be comparatively analyzed.
Firstly, visual grammar is employed to reveal the representational, interactional and compositional meanings of pictures in
new reports;secondly, the evaluative meaning of these images is uncovered from the perspectives of emotion, judgment and
appreciation;finally, the composite pattern between text and images is explored to conclude the comprehensive evaluative
function of the news discourse. Our research results show that the Chinese and western media have different preferences on
this event: the Chinese reports suggest that France and Europe are still safe, thus showing confidence and support, while the
western media reports mainly focus on mourning the dead, and issuing an indirect harsh indictment against the terrorists.

Key words: multimodal news reports, text-image interaction, visual grammar, media reports in China and the West, terrorist
