Abstract: As the discourse with independence and integrity, abstract is a concise statement and highly refined content of a research paper. Aiming to provide reference for dissertation writing through genre analysis, this paper takes 200 English abstracts of the Chinese experimental Master's and Doctor's dissertations(100 for each)in petroleum and natural gas engineering as research objects, then observes, counts and analyzes the research samples from macrostructure of the genre, attempting to confirm the components of such subgenres and build the move model. The results indicate that the English abstracts of the Chinese experimental Master's and Doctor's dissertations in petroleum and natural gas engineering have some shared features:1) the components are basically the same;2) five-move model of "introduction-purpose-method-result-conclusion" is of higher frequency than seven-move model, with little influence of degrees; 3) the same type of research may account for the same or similar move model in discourse of different sub-genres.

Key words: genre analysis, five-move model, seven-move model, Master's and Doctor's dissertations, English abstract
