Abstract: In the 1930s and 1940s,there appeared an upsurge in translation of Western philosophy works in China, when a group of philosophers analyzed the translation issues from a philosophical point of view, and proposed philosophical and dialectical translation methodologies and principles, which are of great importance in China's translation history. Among them,He Lin has the most extensive and comprehensive fruits in translation research, covering all aspects of theory and practice of the translation of philosophical works. His thoughts on translation have a tremendous theoretical value and methodology significance, and are worth further study. The group of translators represented by He Lin explored issues in translation like the definition and translatability, significance and value of translation, and translation of philosophical terms. A thorough investigation into their studies shows that these philosophical translation theories contain the theoretical basis of hermeneutics, and present the hermeneutic characteristics of understanding and communication in translation activities, the steps of translation, the translator's subjectivity, the principles of term translation and so on. The findings reveal He Lin and other scholars' major concern in translating and introducing western philosophical works into China:realizing the sinicization of western philosophy.

Key words: He Lin, thoughts on philosophical translation, translatability, principles of term translation, translator's subjectivity, hermeneutic characteristics
