Focusing on Language Form:an Exploration of a New Angle in College English Teaching

Abstract: Focus on form instruction is viewed as a potential solution to the dilemma in which traditional language teaching can result in limited fluency whereas communicative approaches tend to produce fluency with less accuracy. Integrating language forms into meaning-oriented communicative activity,Focus on form has become a heatedly discussed issue in the research of the second language acquisition home and abroad. This article introduces the theoretical background,especially relevant theories in cognitive psychology,and describes classifications of the instruction and highlights its possible pedagogical implementations in college English teaching. It is supposed to draw due attention of the language teachers in Chinese colleges to the instruction and to urge joint efforts for a feasible approach to a solution to the dilemma in college English teaching.
