Abstract:

Explicitation is a translation strategy to make what is implicit in the source language explicit in the target language without losing the original information. This paper discusses, with concrete examples, the classification of explicitation strategy and demonstrates that there has been a strong tendency of pragmatic explicitation in literary translation. The potentials of three cultural models to deal with pragmatic explicitations are analyzed in conjunction with examples in English translation of Chinese classical poetry. The causes, advantages and disadvantages of pragmatic explicitation are also examined in terms of explicitation limit.
