Role Orientation of Chillingworth

Chillingworth has been viewed as a devil in The Scarlet Letter, whose role helps to carry out the crazy personal revenge and finally lead to self-destruction. The essay, from the view of reader, argues that the destructive revenge of Chillingworth is unreasonable and illogical, which is designed intentionally from the author's part. Based on this analysis, the essay will explore allsided efforts of Chillingworth in the novel and try to present an objective and just role of the character.
