Abstract:

Objective: To explore the correlation between obesity and oxidative stress among college students, and to provide research programs and techniques for the development of diagnostic criteria for oxidative inflammation. Methods: 80 students from Dali University were randomly selected as the subjects of study, and urine samples were taken during physical examination; the urine 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) content was determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). And the body mass index (BMI) is calculated based on the height and body mass data; SPSS 17.0 software were used to perform linear correlation analysis and one-way analysis of variance. Results: BMI value was positively correlated with urine 8-OHdG content, among which rboys=0.332, rgirls=0.338, and rtotal=0.341; obese and overweight people had higher urine 8-OHdG levels than those of normal body mass. Conclusion: Obesity and oxidative stress/oxidative inflammation in college students are downstream events of excess energy intake. There is a statistical correlation between the two, but not causal relationship. There is a quantitative "mirror relationship" between them which provides the possibility to use the diagnostic criteria of obesity to explore the diagnostic criteria of oxidative inflammation.
