Abstract:

Linguistic segregation is both a linguistic and psychological phenomenon, derived from the sociological concept of "segregation. " It is particularly prevalent in ethnically diverse communities relocated under targeted poverty alleviation programs. While linguistic segregation can offer protective benefits for the inheritance of minority mother tongues, it also hinders intercommunity communication and affects linguistic adaptation among residents of different ethnic backgrounds. Based on fieldwork findings, this study examines linguistic segregation and language practices across individual, familial, and community levels within these multiethnic relocated communities. It further analyzes the underlying factors contributing to linguistic segregation and proposes adaptive strategies to better align with the overarching goals of the national relocation-for-poverty-alleviation program.
