Abstract:

Their Eyes Were Watching God is Zora Neale Hurston's masterpiece. Hurston's achievements in Their Eyes Were
Watching God lie not only in her portrayal of the heroine, but also in her unique way to tell her story. One of the most arresting aspects of Their Eyes Were Watching God is its form, a force in which it is written in the framing device. And Their Eyes Were Watching God is particularly provocative for its parallels with slave narratives. Hurston in the novel rewrites the frame and slave narrative strategies by depicting the protagonist, Janie's pilgrimage toward freedom.

Key words: Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God, frame narrative, slave narrative
