A Corpus-based Contrastive Study on Doctors and Patients' Second Person Singular Deixis

Being universal in languages, deixis is also subjective in nature. This thesis is a corpus-based contrastive study on doctors and patients' second person singular deixis. The findings are in two aspects. Doctors do not often utilize their power although they enjoy more profession authorities. They also tend to be polite to patients in doctor-patient communication. Most patients greet their doctors with ni although they are lower in power status. Patients need to improve their speech act in doctor -patient communication.
