Abstract:

Objective: To study the antimalarial activity of ten herbs collected from west Yunnan for the development of new
generation of antimalarial drugs. Methods: After being milled, the plant materials were extracted three times under reflux with 75%
ethanol and water successively. The extracts were completely dried using lyophilization, and the resulting samples were tested for the antimalarial activity by β-hematin inhibition screening assay. The activities were evaluated by IC50 values. Results: Four of the ten testing plants, Metapanax delavayi, Primula denticulate, Rhododendron trichocladum, and Corylopsis himalayana, showed moderate activity to inhibit β-hematin formation with the IC50 over 1 388.9 μg/mL. Conclusion: The four plants deserved to be further studied for their potential antimalarial activity.
