Abstract:

Based on picture-word interference paradigm, visually presenting the distract word and naming the picture as the task,
this paper explores the effect of semantic radical, phonological radical and phonology on Chinese words production. The paper chose
the diractors with five different presenting conditions: semantic radical being similar; phonological radical being similar; homophonic
and phonological radical being similar; homophonic being similar and semantic radical, phonological radical and phonological being
totally unrelated. The time intervals(SOA)between pictures and Chinese words were shown in three ways: -100 ms, 0 ms and 100 ms.
It is found that the facilitation effect of semantic radical appeared at SOA of 100 ms; the facilitation effect of phonological radical and
phonology occurred at SOA of -100 ms, 0 ms and 100 ms. These findings were discussed with the help of modular and interactive
theories of spoken word production.

Key words: picture-word interference paradigm, picture naming, Chinese word production, semantic radical, phonological radical
