Abstract:

A transient scanning method was used to observe the time distribution and activity rhythm of wintering behavior of the
Common Coot(Fulica atra)in 2016 at Erhai Lake, Yunnan. The data of 177 times scanning showed that the most important behavior
in winter for Common Coot was feeding, which accounted for(63±19)% of daylight hours. The second important behavior was resting,
which accounted for(14±17)% of daylight hours. Swimming accounted for(11±11)%,preening accounted for(9±9)%,alerting and
others type of behavior accounted for very few of daylight hours. Surface feeding was the main foraging strategy for the Common Coot in
Erhai Lake, accounting for(79±11)% of time spent feeding during daylight hours. The Common Coot in Erhai Lake exhibited two
resting peaks in daytime activity, namely at noon and dusk.
