Qualitative Study on Professional Identity and Motivation for Enrollment of Midwifery Undergraduates in Yunnan Province

Abstract: Objective To explore the professional identity level and motivation for enrollment of midwifery undergraduates in Yunnan Province. Methods Using phenomenological research methods in qualitative research 11 midwifery undergraduates from two colleges in Yunnan Province were selected as research subjects in-depth interviews were conducted focusing on the motivation for enrollment and professional identity and content analysis method was used to analyze the interview data. Results The professional identity and motivation for enrollment of midwifery undergraduates could be summarized into three main themes motivation for enrollment was strong and there were individual cognitive differences professional identity was higher but the depth of understanding was not enough professional expectations was higher but the curriculum lacked of professional characteristics. Conclusion Midwifery undergraduates have strong motivation for enrollment higher professional identity and professional expectations. Colleges should actively improve their professional cognition and actively compile textbooks for the midwifery undergraduate major to meet their professional knowledge needs.
