Abstract: To explore the relationship between information overload and unintentional rumor spreading behavior, and the mediating
role of negative emotion during the COVID -19 pneumonia pandemic,1 629 university students were surveyed with information
overload scale, negative emotion scale and unintentional rumor spreading behavior scale. It is found that there is a significant positive
correlation between information overload, negative emotion and unintentional rumor spreading behavior. Besides, negative emotion
plays a partial mediating role between information overload and unintentional rumor spreading behavior. Thus, university students'
information overload not only has direct effects on unintentional rumor spreading behavior, but also could affect their unintentional
rumor spreading behavior through negative emotion.

Key words: COVID -19 pneumonia epidemic, information overload, negative emotion, unintentional rumor spreading behavior
