MORAL VANGUARD — THE RELIGIOUS LUNATICS IN O′CONNOR′S WORKS

Abstract: After World War II,the south of America encountered serious moral deterioration.Southern writers aimed their criticism to social and family ethics.O′Connor,a southern woman writer created a lot of religious lunatics from a unique irrationality perspective.Those mad men,aiming at improving the degraded moral,challenged the deceptive and indifferent God and religion by their own experiences.The basic characteristics of them can be summarized as antiGod,violence and moral vanguard.Their ethic values and crazy behaviors reflected O′Connors understanding of social and religious beliefs in American south:Catholicism is the only cure for the moral deprived southern society.
