Abstract: Aggregation number of hydrophobically associating water soluble polymer (HAWSP) in the hydrophobic domain has been examined using fluorescence probe as a function of the carbon numbers of the hydrophobic groups. The HAWSP was obtained by coOpolymerization of acrylamide , sodium acrylate and octadecyl dimethyl allyl ammonium chloride in laboratory. Both
monomer and excimer emission are observed. Three ideal assumptions are applied to simplify the calculation. The polymer concentration corresponding to the maximum of the Ie/ Im is obtained , so the aggregation number of HAWSP can be calculated. Results show that the aggregation number is in proportion to the carbon numbers of hydrophobic groups.
