Abstract:

Objective: To investigate the yeast carrier rate, species distribution and susceptibility to common antifungal drugs in external urethral meatus of healthy college students. Methods: A total of 261 healthy university students were randomly recruited from a university in Yunnan Province, and the swabs from urinary meatus were collected for isolation, identification, drug sensitivity testing, and statistical analysis. Results: 39 yeast species were isolated, with a carrier rate of 14.9%;  among them, 6 strains were isolated from 130 male samples, with a carrier rate of 4.6%, while 33 strains were isolated from 131 female samples, with a carrier rate of 25.2%. The difference of carrier rate between different gender groups was statiscally significant(χ2=21.73,P=0.005). Among 39 yeast species, there were 11 strains of Candida albicans(28.2%), 24 strains of Candida glabrata(61.5%), 4 strains of other Candida species(10.3%). The result showed that the geometric means of the yeast to fluconazole, flurocytosine and amphotericin B were 22.03, 0.16 and 4.37 μg/mL, respectively, and the drug resistance rates of isolates were 15.4%, 0.0% and 100.0%, respectively. Conclusion: The prevalence of Candida colonization among healthy college students at urinary meatus is relatively low, with smooth colony Candida glabrata being the predominant species. The colonization rate of Candida among female students is significantly higher than that among male students. Some Candida strains exhibit intrinsic resistance to commonly used antifungal drugs.
