Conceptual Structure of the Basic Color Terms for Lisu and Pumi High School Students:
Concurrently Compare that of the Mosuo High School Students

Abstract:

Free classification was applied to study Lisu and Pumi high school students’classification of eleven types of basic color terms and the result was compared with that of Mosuo students. The results showed that Lisu high school students’conceptual structure of the basic color terms had two dimensions: ①chromatic color / achromatic color; ② bright color / dark color. Lisu students classified eleven types of basic color terms into four types of achromatic color, dark mottled color, color of flower and fruit, and background color. The conceptual structure of Pumi students had two dimensions as well: ①chromatic color /achromatic color; ②pure color / mixed color, classifying elven basic color terms into four groups of achromatic color, dark mottled color, chromatic color, and red-pink color. The different and similar classification of eleven basic color terms of Lisu, Pumi and Mosuo people revealed the influence from genes,
environment, culture and education. The study also manifested that geographical influence on human’s color conceptual structure through production mode.
