Abstract: 〔Abstract〕Objective: To examine the clinical efficacy of nasal balloon autoinflation in the treatment of children with OME(otitis
media with effusion). Methods: We selected 78 kids(126 ears), aged from 3-14, who were diagnosed with OME but without chronic
rhinosinusitis, acute tonsillitis or adenoid hypertrophy in the outpatient department of People′s Hospital of Wenshan Zhuang and Miao
Autonomous Prefecture from January 2015 to January 2018. They were divided into the acute group with 34 kids(60 ears)and the
chronic group with 44 kids(66 ears). All of the patients were treated with the method of nasal balloon autoinflation by asking them to
blow balloons through the nasal cavity twice or three times a day. Check-up was performed once a week to observe the curative effect,
and the maximum course of treatment was no more than 3 months. Results: In the acute group, 48 ears were cured(80.0% cure rate),
8 ears got improvements(13.3% improvement rate), and the treatment of 4 ears failed(6.7% ineffective rate). In the chronic group, 47
ears were cured(71.2% cure rate), 12 ears got improvements(18.2% improvement rate), and the treatment of 7 ears failed(10.6%
ineffective rate). In the acute group, 15 ears reached the standard of cure after 1-month treatment, 24 ears reached the standard of cure
after 2-month treatment, and 9 ears reached the standard of cure after 3-month treatment; 8 ears reached the improvement standard
after 3-month treatment. In the chronic group, 8 ears reached the healing standard after 1-month treatment, 14 ears reached the healing
standard after 2-month treatment, and 25 ears reached the healing standard after 3-month treatment; 12 ears reached the improvement
standard after 3-month treatment. Conclusion: Nasal balloon autoinflation is an effective indirect eustachian tube inflation method for
the treatment of OME in children, and has good clinical efficacy in the treatment of kids with acute and chronic OME.
