Abstract: Socrates in ancient Greek once said that virtue is knowledge, while in Buddhist scriptures, there is a saying that a beast can have talent which means that there is no necessary relationship between knowledge and virtue therefore it is not enough for one to have knowledge only. So,Daisaku Ikeda's teacher,Josei Toda made a restrict distinction between knowledge and wisdom. Based on this and with Confucianism’s idea about “goodness”,Daisaku Ikeda holds that wisdom, benevolence and unity of knowledge and action is the origin of peace, happiness and value. This is the “good” use of knowledge. This “goodness” is the fusion of western and eastern traditional ethics which has a very realistic meaning for the sustainable development of the world.

Key words: Daisaku Ikeda, traditional eastern ethics, traditional western ethics, wisdom, benevolence, unity of knowledge and action
