Abstract: The 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte has always been regarded as a model of Marx's analysis of major historical events from the perspective of historical materialism. Marx applied this theory to the analysis of how Louis Bonaparte chose restoration. Besides the decisive role of material production, Marx also attributed the restoration to the joint forces of politics, ideology, the mass and individual factors. The 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte reveals the dialectical nature of social development and contains the foundation of Marxist theory on history evolution, thus becoming an important stage of the development of historical materialism. Engels then developed Marx's and his own thoughts on the determining factors for history evolution into a more systematic and complete theory.

Key words: The 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, the thought on joint forces in history evolution, historical materialism, methodological principle, Marxist theory of class struggle
