Abstract: Education is an important way of poverty alleviation. In the ethnic minority areas of abject poverty in Sichuan, the task of poverty alleviation and poverty relief work is arduous because of the remote location, backward economic development and education level, the large number of ethnic minorities, and the huge body of poverty-stricken population. Through the past years of hard work in poverty alleviation through education in the ethnic minority regions in Sichuan, the coverage of education has been expanded and the enrollment rate of students from poverty-stricken families has been promoted. However, there are still some problems, such as the inaccurate identification of the subjects of poverty alleviation education, lack of comprehensive educational achievement assessment mechanism, and the insufficient funds for poverty alleviation. To tackle the problems, all government departments and units must collaborate closely so as to improve more accurate identification of the subjects of poverty alleviation through education,to develop preschool education, compulsory education, secondary vocational education and higher education, to strengthen the construction of the teaching staff, and to promote bilingual education. Such efforts should aim to establish a long-term mechanism for poverty alleviation through education in areas of abject poverty with the government as the main body collaborating with other poverty alleviation bodies.

Key words: Sichuan, poverty alleviation through education, ethnic minority regions, areas of abject poverty, targeted poverty alleviation
