Abstract: his paper, through an analysis of Tea House,explores the theme of this play and its consistency with those in Lao She′s other works after 1950s.The pessimistic mentality reflected in Tea House was common in Lao She′s works before 1950s but very rare after. The author then points out that Tea House,carrying forward Lao She′s concerns about nation and people since 1937,demonstrates his maturation in literary concept and literature production, and his inclination for left wing literature.Besides,Tea House also demonstrates the contradiction in Lao She′s literature production after 1950 and his fight against it.This paper, thereby,is hoped to cast light on modern and contemporary literature research in China.

Key words: Lao She, Tea House, drama, contradiction, rebellion, modern and contemporary literature
