Abstract:

Chengdu and Chongqing，the two cities with the greatest potential for economic development in west China，have had a very good basis for economic cooperation.Based on previous researches，the present paper advances the “ellipse theory”，which puts Chengdu-Chongqing economic zone into the national scheme of the 12th “five-year” plan，with both cities as economic centers.The authors first discuss the concept of the bifocal economic zone and city group，pointing out that Chengdu-Chongqing economic zone is an important central point of “China′s economic ellipse”.The paper then concludes that the two cities must follow the ellipse model to establish a competitive cooperation and win-win relationship，and to locate the focal point of the construction of Chengdu-Chongqing economic zone.
