Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of chewing gum on the recovery of bowel function after colorectal surgery. Methods:
A thorough search of the data from Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Medline, Web of Science, CBM, CNKI, Wanfang and Vip was
performed. Randomized controlled trials(RCT)about effect of chewing gum on bowel function after colorectal surgery were collected,
and meta-analysis was conducted with RevMan 5.3 software. Results:Fourteen RCT including 1 041 patients were enrolled in this
study. The Meta-analysis revealed that chewing gum could significantly reduce the time to the first passage of flatus[MD=-9.60 h,
95%IC(-15.22,-3.98), P<0.001], the time to first defecation[MD=-17.19 h, 95%IC(-26.04, -8.34), P<0.001], and postoperative
hospital stay after colorectal surgery[MD=-1.16 d, 95%IC(-2.01, -0.32), P<0.05]. Conclusion:Chewing gum is an effective way
to promote the recovery of bowel function after colorectal surgery.
